Sound Transit's light rail infrastructure in the Central Puget Sound region includes deep tunnels and subway stations. The hydro-geologic conditions in this region include multiple perched groundwater levels in conjunction with the interlayered and intermixed glacial deposits. In the tunneling industry there is an old saying: "If you don't control the groundwater, then it controls you." During our heavy civil underground construction, the Sound Transit team worked closely with Richard Martin Groundwater LLC to control difficult groundwater conditions to safely and adequately construct a number of our underground workings.

Groundwater Consulting Services Overview

Richard Martin Groundwater LLC provides consulting services for all areas of groundwater. The projects described on the individual service pages represent Richard's experience with both Richard Martin Groundwater LLC and previous firms.

Dewatering and Drainage

Excavation and construction below the water table can be a challenge without proper groundwater control. Our services include evaluation, design, and construction observation for both temporary construction dewatering and permanent drainage.

Groundwater and Soil Contamination

With a myriad of ever changing regulations, contamination on your site can drastically impact site development and project costs. To help keep your project moving forward, we provide testing and evaluation of groundwater and soil contamination, design remediation systems, and negotiation with regulators.

Stormwater Infiltration

We can help you with stormwater management design for Low Impact Development and Green Stormwater Infrastructure projects. Our services include evaluation of soil infiltration capacity for design of rain gardens or deeper underground injection wells, and assessment of site suitability for infiltration.

Groundwater Resource Assessment

Limited water supplies and increasingly complicated regulations make assessment of groundwater resources a challenge. Whether you are looking to install a water supply well, estimate the yield of an aquifer, or design a closed loop heating/cooling system, we can help you test and evaluate aquifers and wells, and provide design recommendations for your project.

Computer Modeling

Computer modeling can be used to help us understand the behavior of groundwater systems in complicated settings or when subsurface data is limited. We have experience in a wide range of projects where computer modeling has been utilized to efficiently evaluate complex subsurface conditions.

Peer Review and Expert Witness

Groundwater issues can often to lead to disagreements and disputes between owners, consultants, and regulators. We provide independent opinions as part of a peer review process, or in the case of a claim or lawsuit, expert witness services testifying on groundwater.
